We give you some suggestions for what vegetables to plant and how to care for your garden as the seasons change.
Spring is on its way, and now is the ideal time to start or expand your vegetable garden at home. Now that the days are getting longer and the weather is getting warmer, it’s the perfect time to plant certain vegetable varieties and take advantage of nature’s flower and plant season.
There are some vegetables you can plant in your garden as early as mid-March, but even though spring is just around the corner, it’s important to be aware of severe temperature drops that can occur during some nights because they can damage the first sprouts of your fruits and vegetables.
Artichoke, lettuce, beans, zucchini and cucumber are cold-tolerant vegetables that can be planted in March and April. Artichokes can be planted in the winter and spring, while the other vegetables can be planted when the average temperature is around 15°C (59°F). All of these vegetables require soil fertilisation on a regular basis, and lettuce and cucumber require consistent watering.
Add a splash of colour
Eggplant is a vegetable that you can plant in early April to add an extra splash of colour to your garden. Strawberries can also be planted during this time if precautions are taken to protect them from severe weather. Some vegetables can be planted all year and can serve as the foundation of your garden, especially if you’re just getting started. Some of these vegetables are onion, cauliflower, spinach, and parsley, which will help you get started until early May when you can plant other vegetables or fruits like carrots, peppers, or turnips.
Another option for a more secure seed starting is to make a seedbed that can be protected in a small greenhouse or inside your home, preserving the early sprouts from temperature drops until they are strong enough to be transplanted to the vegetable patch.
Organise the garden according to your preferences
Most of these vegetables bear fruit in three to five months, so we recommend organising your space and choosing fruits and vegetables that you enjoy eating at home. With our seedlings and seeds, you will be able to start or expand your personal garden at Miami Garden.
